Abstract

The objective was to determine whether sociodemographic, clinical and occupational factors estimate the presence of daytime sleepiness in physicians at the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo. It is developed under a correlational-causal approach and a cross-sectional design. The population was made up of 250 doctors from clinical and surgical areas, active between December 2022 and March 2023, from which a representative sample of 129 was selected. A questionnaire was applied that included sociodemographic, clinical and occupational variables, in addition to the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. The findings show that sociodemographic factors, such as age, gender, marital status, and number of children, as well as clinical variables such as body mass index, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and depression are not significantly related to daytime sleepiness. However, a relevant association with stress and anxiety levels was identified. It is concluded that sleepiness in physicians is mainly determined by clinical factors (stress and anxiety) and occupational factors (surgical work area).
